Wet pulls handbrake for some

WET and gloomy conditions prevailed in Round 7 of Sunraysia District Tennis Association’s winter pennant.

While most matches were finished, wet and slippery courts saw some matches abandoned for fear of injury.

All Division 3 matches were completed, including Nichols Point Diamonds taking on stablemates the Nichols Point DIs.

The Diamonds’ six-sets-to-three win was on the back of some very strong play by Thomas Moore and Geoff John, who were both undefeated on the day.

Sarnia Saints’ young guns came out firing in their eight-sets-to-one victory over bottom-of-the-ladder Wentworth Wascals. The interstate travel did not phase Aydin Yazici, Cooper Young and Hamish Smyth who did not drop a set.

The Division 3 match of the round, however, was between Alcheringa Almighties and St Andrews Spartans.

Chris Pattinson and Nate Hogarth, in his first senior game, took no time to adjust to the Almighties home courts and produced a very fine 8-3 win over Ash Quinlivan and Mark Henderson to open the Spartans’ account.

Quinlivan got his revenge in the second when he paired with Max Cornwell to defeat Pattinson and Gavin Tisler 8-5.

In a see-sawing event the third men’s doubles went to the Spartans, 8-5.

The women’s doubles were also divided.

Monique Sapuppo and Leanne Hancock of the Almighties were too good for Kirsty Pattinson and Margot Wheaton, winning 8-4.

Pattinson and Julie Dunn made it one ladies’ doubles a piece when they defeated Sapuppo and Louise Olofsson, 8-5.

The third was a big win to the Almighties, 8-2.

This tied the match at 3 sets all with the mixed to play.

The Spartans could be excused for thinking they had the game in the bag when Tisler and Dunn produced an almost flawless 8-2 win over Cornwell and Olofsson.

The Almighties were not finished, though, and took out the remaining mixed doubles 8-4 and 8-2 to finish winners five sets to four, 55 games to 49.

Leanne Hancock was the player of the match.
