MILDURA

ON the Labour Day public holiday, Monday, March 11, 42 players played a Stableford competition. The winner was Joseph Rocca (2) with 36 points from runner-up Robert Latta (24) on 34 points on a countback from third-placed Nick Katis (9).

Balls: (8) 32 points on a countback. NTPs: 2nd Trentham Estate – Alan Lay 150cm; 12th Zilzie Wines – Lee McLeod 265cm.

The ladies nine-hole Stableford competition played on Tuesday, March 12 was won by Aileen Norton with 11 points. The 18-hole event was won by Glenda Hiskins (36) with 36 points.

Last Wednesday the men played a stroke competition for the TWW/Ransoms monthly Mug. A Grade winner was Trevor Rogers (15) with 71 net from runner-up Jeff Chalmers (16) with 72 net. Third place went to Alan Lay (16) on 73 net. B Grade winner was Graham Robertson (26) with 71 net on a three-way countback from runner-up Boof Ferguson (20) and third placed Peter Briggs (24).

Balls: (13) 73 net on a countback. NTPs: 1st Pete’s Pure wine – Mark Woodhouse 210cm; 2nd Trentham Estate/ Pig – George Szentpaly 315cm; 10th Trentham Estate – George Poriazis 590cm.

On Friday the ladies played an 18-hole Stableford, and Carla Sherriff (26) with 33 points was the winner.

Saturday was a medley par event with 98 players taking to the course.

A Grade winner was Mark Woodhouse (3) with +6 from runner-up Rob Pallot (3) on +4. Third place went to Geoff Hazeldine (10) on +2.

B Grade winner was Denny Fox (16) with +5 from runner-up George Szentpaly (19) on +4 with third place going to Ross Pointon (19) on +2.

C Grade winner was Jimmy Pippen (24) (with the score of the day) with +7 from runner-up (20) John Harvey (20) on +2. Third place went to Tony Dal Corobbo (29) square with the card.

Balls: (24) square on a countback. The TWW eagles nest went off with George Poriazis having an eagle two on the 13th. NTPs: 1st Pete’s Pure wine – Rob Donaldson 90cm; 2nd Water Wizard/Pig – Garry Smart 283cm; 10th Trentham Estate – Paul Treacy 545cm; 12th Zilzie Wines – Brian Bird 195cm.

The Mildura Jayco Caravans Open is on April 4, 5 and 6. A full field is expected for this popular event, so get your names in early.

There is a working bee scheduled for Sunday from 8am to noon to help prepare for the open tournament.


RIVERSIDE

THE long weekend on Monday, March 11 had a good field play a medley Stableford competition. Joel Doherty won A Grade with 37 points, and it took a countback to declare Roberto Fuocco the runner-up in front of Glen Walker, both on 36 points. Tanner Begg (Coomealla) had a ripper score in B Grade, completing his round with 44 points for a comfortable win over Cooper Mitchell on 38 points.

Balls: 33 points on a countback. NTPs: 4th – Wade Mitchell 294cm; 7th – Damen Southgate 182cm; 12th – Damen Southgate 328cm; 18th – Cooper Mitchell 483cm.

Last Wednesday’s Stableford event was played in two grades, with Bodan Bishop picking up the win in A Grade with 36 points from runner-up David Lloyd on a countback from Mark Cleary, both on 35 points. John Denman finished on 37 points to win B Grade in front of Alan Connoly on 36 points.

Balls: 33 points. NTPs: Zilzie Wines 4th – Stephen Smith 202cm; 7th – Mark Cleary 210cm; Sunbeam Fruits; 17th – Stephen Smith 210cm; Good Deal Tyres 18th – Peter George 315cm.

The ladies played a Stableford competition on Thursday and Lisa Garioch had 39 points to take the win, five shots ahead of nearest rival Adel Dal Corobbo on 34 points.

Balls: 32 points. NTPs: Zilzie Wines 4th – Janet Luke 560cm; 12th – Lyn Delmenico 138cm; 18th – Chitra Rankin 20cm.

David Byrnes had a great game in the nine-hole medley Stableford event on Friday, winning with a super 24 points, with Wayne Mayne runner-up from Rob Garioch on a countback, both with 21 points.

The ladies Stableford on Saturday was won by Janette Mason on 37 points from Roz Nash on 36 points.

NTPs: Zilzie Wines 4th – Janette Mason 1680cm; Zilzie Wines 7th – Roz Nash 680cm; 12th – Salli Fox 115cm; 18th – Kathy Ridley 26cm.

The men played par in three grades on Saturday. Tony Scullino had +2 to win A Grade, with Craig Jervies +1 in second place. A countback was needed in B Grade, with two players coming in with a score of +4, with Brodie Ryan having the better back nine to take the win from Joel Doherty. A +3 gave Keenan Wade the C Grade win from runner-up John Delorenzo +2.

Balls: -1. There were two eagles on Saturday, the first coming from Craig Jervies on the par five 11th, and the second went to Rob Garioch on the par four 17th. NTPs: Zilzie Wines 4th – Andrew Forbes 420cm; 12th – Simon Dale 250cm; Sunbeam Fruits 17th – Rob Garioch (birdie); Deakin Estate Wines 18th – Damen Southgate 170cm.

The round of the week came on Sunday in the medley Stableford event, when Joel Doherty topped off his week, with not just another win but the lowest score he has carded in a competition. He smoked his way around the course to finish with an outstanding 47 points (76 off the stick).


MERBEIN

ON Saturday a Stableford “String” event was played which was well attended and proved very popular. Each player started the day with a piece of string equal to their handicap and could use any part of the string to improve the position of their ball, with the amount of string used then discarded. Winner on the day was Paul Hollingsworth with 42 points from runner-up Ken Matulick with 41 points. Thanks to Michael Thomson for sponsoring the event.

VETERANS

THE next event will be a single Stableford event to be held at the Merbein Golf Club on Monday, April 8. This round has been delayed from the usual first Monday of the month because of Easter. For many of our members it will be the first time that they have seen the new Merbein Golf Club clubhouse. Registrations will be relocated to the new building and will commence at 8.30am. The club has a limited numbers of carts for hire, so please contact the club if you require one.

Last month we had 10 new members and they will be able to collect their badges when registering. It’s not too late for other intending members to come along and sign up, and both men and women are most welcome to join.

It’s a little over six weeks until the Victorian Veteran Golfers Association’s championship event which will be held in Sunraysia. Details are on the VVGA website, the Riverside Golf Club website or by contacting the club directly.


COOMEALLA

COMING events: Today the men and women play par; Friday is a medley nine-hole Stableford; Saturday the men and women play Stableford; Sunday is an 18-hole medley Stableford.

Last Wednesday the men and women played an Irish Stableford. Men’s winner: Ron Moore 80 points, runner-up Trevor Carroll 77 points, third Frank Tassone 76 points

Balls: (10) 80 points to 68 points. NTPs: 7th McGuigan Wines – Ross Robertson 359cm; 18th Trentham Estate – Ross Robertson 245cm.

Women’s winner: Felicity Nutting 75 points, runner-up Sandy Waters 73 points, third Lucy Morrison 70 points.

Friday’s nine-hole Stableford winner was Jonathon Satyo 20 points from runner-up Greg Rhodes 19 points. Balls: (5) 18 points to 17 points. Saturday was a medley 4BBB Stableford: Winners Ross Robertson and Peter Duscher 47 points, runners-up Jim Fahey and Cam Stewart 47 points, third Stephen Lush and Daryle Oldham 45 points, fourth John Henwood and Karen Henwood 44 .

Balls: (14 pairs) 47 points to 41 points. NTPs (men): 3rd Zilzie Wine – Glen Marr 330cm; 7th McGuigan Wines – Robin Ferris (hole-in-one); 11th Walkers IGA – Glen Marr 414cm; 18th Trentham Estate – Matthew Pascoe 196cm. Sunday’s Stableford winner was Stephen Godfrey 38 points from runner-up Maurice Baldock 37 points.

RED CLIFFS

LAST Wednesday the ladies played stroke and Sue Gathercole had 69 net to win from runner-up Rita Chase with 72 net. Denise Morgan won a ball.

NTPs: 3rd – K. Hart; 8th – S. Gathercole; 12th – S. Gathercole; 15th – F. Englefield; 17th – S. Gathercole.

The men played a Stableford event last Wednesday and Ray Pain had 38 points to win from runner-up Roger Walder on a countback with 36 points.

Balls: M. Hogan, P. Dominelli and N. Birch. NTPs: 8th –G. Bettess; 15th – G. Riordan; 17th – R. Walder; 18th – G. Bettess. Tony Johns had 23 points to win the Friday nine-hole chicken run.

Saturday saw both genders play for the monthly medal. Fayle Englefield won the ladies A Grade on a countback with 73 net from runner-up Sandra Marwood. In B Grade Heather Shaw had 68 net to win from runner-up Sue Gathercole with 76 net.

Brent Smith had 70 net to win the men’s A Grade from runner-up Paul Dominelli with 70 net. Glen Riordan had 68 net to win B Grade from runner-up Jesse Martin on 70 net.
