CARDROSS captain Aaron Graham believes his side is building towards a bright future in the Red Cliffs Cricket Association.
On a win-loss ratio it hasn’t been a great season for the Lions, with a solitary win from their six completed matches, but the skipper says scoreboards don’t tell the whole story.
The victory for Cardross came against Fire Brigade in the final round prior to the Christmas break, and Saturday they face a Tempy side that have lost their past four games, their previous victory coming over the Lions.
“The scores themselves don’t really tell the whole story of where we are,” Graham said.
“We have some young blokes playing and some inexperienced cricketers but we feel we’re building to something good at the club.
“The ever-reliable Jez Aworth can do it with bat an ball, and can even put on the gloves. He’s become a really big leader at the club, not just on the field but off it as well.
“Guys like Seth and Noah Langian are taking some real strides forward and we have a young fella in Noah Biddle who hasn’t played a lot of cricket but you can see the influence he has on the field and he just keeps improving.
“I feel on our day, our top four or five can make the required runs and if our bowlers can keep teams to 120 or less on our day we can beat anyone. Tempy always present a good challenge and they’ve been a top team for a long time.”
Graham said the club had waived membership and ball fees in a bid to entice more players to the club.
“At the start of the season we pushed hard to field an A Grade and B Grade team,” he said.
“That didn’t pan out how we planned but we continued with things we’d implemented like no ball fees or memberships and trying to hold a lot more social functions to cover for that.
“We’ve had mates of guys playing with us at the moment who have shown an interest in playing for us next season, and we feel the future is looking promising.”
In other RCCA matches this week, top two sides Ouyen Rams and Robinvale Euston Rangers face off at Blackburn Park, while Millewa are at home to Fire Brigade at Mildura Sporting Precinct.
