Wil Parker named in Victoria’s Sheffield Shield squad

MONASH Tigers cricketer Wil Parker, the grandson of Sunraysia sporting icon Brian Weightman, has been selected in Victoria’s 12-man Sheffield Shield squad to travel to play New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground from Friday.

The 17-year old leg spin bowler, the son of Nyree Parker (nee Weightman) and Monash great Cameron and nephew of former Shield cricketer and VFL footballer Geoff, found out the news of his selection earlier this week after training with Victoria.

“We’re over the moon for him,” Weightman said.

“He’s over the moon himself.”

Parker is another spinning option for the squad with Jon Holland sidelined with a finger injury.

Jake Fraser-McGurk, Melbourne Stars BBL wicket keeper Seb Gotch and Travis Dean have all been included in the squad.

Victoria are yet to win a game in the Sheffield Shield this season, with two draws, three losses and one no result (after a match against Western Australia was abandoned due to pitch conditions) from their six games before the Big Bash League break.

New South Wales sit atop the ladder with five wins and a draw.

The match will be live streamed on cricket.com.au.
