WORKERS have announced they will be a force to be reckoned with this Midweek Pennant season when they took full toll on last year’s runners-up Irymple.
Ken Job’s rink of Eddy Vuik, Peter Mitchell and Trish Walters lead the way for the Green and Gold with a solid 43-11 win over Ian Kellett, Chris Scott, Anne Kellett and Tracey Metcalf.
Peter Bishop, Brian Horton, Lorraine Wallace and Kerry Wallace took the points against Graham Newey, Lorraine Millward, John Vuik and Geoff Madigan with a 22-15 win.
The Suns’ Wayne Gardner, Mick Legin, Gail Vance and Dianne Gardner had a close battle against Di Smith, Fred Bacon, Kristina Archer and Ron Archer, the Workers unit getting home 27-24.
The Workers completed a clean sweep, 92(12) to 50(-).
Coomealla and Red Cliffs had a ding-dong clash at The Dome.
The home side’s rink skipped by Mark Deacon with Dinky Nichols, Rod Rowe and Carol Ross collected a 24-17 win over Marg Dominelli, Don Reid, Sue Harford and Ron Harvey.
Tigers champion Carolyn Coles kept the scores tight, skipping her rink of Darren Robinson, Margaret McGlashan and Bruce Harford to an 18-18 draw against Delwyn Milner, Peter Lambert, Neva Cooke and Ron McAdam.
Brenda Lindsay’s rink of Trevor Clarke, Helen Press and Luke Savaidas-Milne were winners for Red Cliffs collecting a 28-16 win over Tom Bath, Raelene Jenkins, Coralie Lever and Nan Bath.
Red Cliffs took the overall points 63(9) to 58(3) in a tight opening-round match.
Ouyen hosted Mildura at Blackburn Park and came close to collecting the points with two rinks saluting the judge.
Sue Kelly’s unit of Ken Graham, Lorraine Hickmott and Ning Pitcher were too good for Judy Osborne’s rink of Ken Yeowart, Fran Richards and Rob Hanns with a solid 28-18 win.
Geoff Hahnel, Terry Pitcher, Karen Crook and Matthew Martin took the points over Shirley Pupillo, Peter Ellis, Glenys Yeowart and Alik Kowalewicz, 24-22.
First-time skip Isaiah Bettess held the Magic together with Joan Bunney, Val Munro and Rodney Johnstone collecting a 32-15 win over Janet Vallance, Mick Donaghy, Barb Hahnel and Susan Willox.
The Magic won 72(8) to 67(4).
Second-division matches provided some interesting results, as both Workers teams recorded good wins to kickstart their season.
Euston travelled to Underbool and collected the points. Mildura were solid winners over Red Cliffs.
Division 2 comprises only two rinks. Points allocated are two points per rink win and four points for the overall result. The total points available is eight.
Workers 2 62(8) defeated Wentworth 33 (0), Underbool 37(2) defeated Euston 55(6), Irymple 37(2) defeated Workers 3 46(6), and Mildura 54(8) defeated Red Cliffs 33(0).
