Workers consolidate top spot

WORKERS have continued their promising start to the Division 1 Midweek Pennant season with strong win against Red Cliffs to head up the competition in Sunraysia bowls.

Ken Job skipped Eddy Vuik, Peter Mitchell and Richard Clarke to a 34-14 win over Brenda Lindsay, Trev Clarke, Helen Press and Luke Savaidas-Milne.

Dianne Smith defeated Margaret Dominelli 31-15.

The Tigers’ Carolyn Coles was too good for Peter Bishop recording a solid 26-18 win to collect two valuable points for Red Cliffs to secure third spot on the table.

The Workers side cruised to the line winning 83(10) – Red Cliffs 55(2).

Irymple were too good for Ouyen with a strong 81(10) – 48 (2) victory.

Ian Kellett teamed up with Chris Scott, John Vuik and Tracey Metcalfe to record a 35-11 win over Alan Crook, Reg Dean, Roy Latta and Karen Crook.

Lorraine Millward out pointed Geoff Hahnel winning 25-14.

Two Blue’s Sue Kelly piloted her rink to a 23-21 win over Graeme Phillips.

Mildura matched up against Coomealla at Dareton and came away with a 26-shot victory.

Joan Bunney, Peter Ellis, Ken Hayes and Rodney Johnstone played consistent bowls defeating Delwyn Milner, Nan Bath, Angela St Clair and Peter Lambert 33-15.

Judy Osborne had her rink on song winning 31-21 over Pam Lambert.

Mark Deakin lowered Mark Eckel’s colours recording a 26-24 win for the Cannons. Mildura 88(10) defeated Coomealla 62(2).

Division One Ladder: Workers 22, Mildura 18, Red Cliffs 11, Irymple 10, Ouyen 6, Coomealla 5.

Division Two saw several tight matches.

Wentworth defeated Underbool 48(7) – (1). Red Cliffs 53(6) were too good for Workers 2 47(2). Workers 3 outpointed Mildura 2 55(6) – 52(2) and Irymple 2 proved too good for Euston winning 52(6) – 39(2).

Division Two Ladder: Workers 3 12, Workers 2 10, Mildura 2 10, Euston 8, Irymple 2 8, Wentworth 7, Red Cliffs 6.

Sunday saw the first two rounds of the State Mixed Pairs contested.

Quarter-final results saw Russell Gilbert win on a forfeit from Corey Bettess, Glenn Scott and Brenda Lindsay defeated Dianne Smith 17 – 8, Dale Presley-Barwick and Nola Mason lost to Bob Deacon and Joan Bunney 12-17, K. Capper and Trish Walters defeated defending champions Dinky Nichols and Mick Rhoden 12- 9.

The semi-finals and final will be played at Irymple on Sunday.
