Nichols Point’s Colby Marr celebrates cricket’s return

COLBY Marr had longed for cricket to return, and when it did he made the most of it.

The 12-year-old Nichols Point player scored 63 not out in the opening round of the season in his under-14 match against Mildura Settlers, before rain washed out the second half of the game at the weekend.

His performance earned him the nod as the first Sunraysia Cricket Association Junior Player of the Round for the season.

The left-handed opening bat reached his half-century, retired and then came back at the end of the innings to add a few more runs to his tally.

“I was just happy to be back, (we’ve) been waiting for a while,” he said.

“I felt pretty free and not (under) too much pressure. I just had a bit of fun out there.

“Just being around cricket and your friends (is great).”

Marr, who has his eye on making the Mallee Murray Bulls representative squad, will be extremely busy over the coming weeks.

He will be part of the School Sports Victoria (SSV) Team Vic Australian Football Showcase Day on Sunday in the boys’ 12 and under squad, before immediately heading to Shepparton to be part of the SSV Victorian 12 and Under Cricket Championships.

Also a talented forward for South Mildura, Marr said he didn’t have a preference for one sport or the other.

“It’s one of those things … in cricket season you like cricket more, and in football season you like footy more,” he said.

As the Junior Player of the Round, Marr receives a $50 voucher from Sportspower Mildura.
