VETERANS

BECOMING a member of the Sunraysia & District Victorian Veteran Golf Association automatically makes you an associated member of the Victorian Veteran Golfers Association. Provided you are 55 years of age or older you are eligible to participate in any competition organised by the 21 districts affiliated with the VVGA or any of the statewide competitions organised by the VVGA. Such an event was recently held in Sunraysia.

The VVGA routinely sends out information about their statewide events. The next event is the Annual Sandgreen Championships to be held at the Parklands Golf Club Hamilton on August 12 and 13, a Monday and Tuesday. Entries close July 29.

Details can be found online at [email protected] or by calling Peter Irvine the tournament director at the club.

The Monday competition is a 4BBB Stableford event and the Tuesday event is a single Stableford event.

It is a medley event open to both male and female players. As space in this article is limited members are advised to personally visit the VVGA website to keep up to date about events and information, vvga.org.au.

Closer to home is our next district event to be held at the Coomealla Golf Club on Monday, August 5. It will be the Coomealla Club single Stableford competition.

As usual I suggest that if you want to hire a cart that you contact the golf club promptly as the S&DVVGA does not arrange this. It’s a personal responsibility of vet members. I will have more details in next week’s report.

RIVERSIDE

OVER the past week there have been three major events played at Riverside: the Ladies 27-Hole Foursomes Championships, the Juniors Orange Tee Tournament and MDGA District 4BBB Championships.

Those who participated in the two later events had reasonable weather, but the ladies who contested the Foursomes on Thursday experienced atrocious weather conditions, with strong winds and continuous rain for most of their 27 holes, resulting in all of the B Grade players pulling out of the event partway through and the remaining players completing theirs and arriving at the clubhouse totally drenched.

Monday, July 8 gave Fletcher Ryan a win, after his 38 points, in the medley Stableford. He was followed by runner-up Isaiah Faulkhead on 36 points, after a countback against Max Marks.

Tuesday the ladies nine-hole par comp was won by Veran Wakefield, who came in square, after a countback from Marie Hudak.

NTPs: Zilzie Wines 4th – Adel Dal Corobbo 442cm, and Zilzie Wines 7th – Adel Cal Corobbo 480cm.

The Fairways were also filled with juniors on Tuesday, in the Orange Tee Tournament, which is a course shortened to accommodate the juniors.

Oliver Zambelli played an exceptional game to come away with the honours, with a super 67/68.

Second place went to Harvey Spratt, after his excellent round of 77/72, and Oliver Cooper came in third after a fine score of 79/74. The next stars of the future, boys. Balls went out to 77 net.

There were three eagles on the day, Oliver Zambelli on the par-four 9th, Joel Doherty on the par-five 11th and Nate Williams on the par-five 14th.

Wednesday’s members and visitors’ comp had a field of 90 play out the 18 holes, in three grades.

Graeme Southwell nabbed the top spot in A Grade with a winning score of 39 points. A three-way countback placed Shawn Clarke as runner-up, over Paul Wilkinson and Michael Holcroft, all on 38 points.

The outright score of the week and winner of B Grade went to Lauchlan Smith, after he smashed the course up with a brilliant 47 points, to be seven in front of the runner up, George Riordan, who played a nice round of 40 points.

With more great scores appearing in C Grade, Billy Stephens just pipped Harvey Spratt, when both had outstanding scores of 42 points.

As mentioned, the weather on Thursday was a shocker and with the Ladies Foursomes Championships being a 27-hole event, it was not going to be an easy day. With championships normally being held in A and B grades, it was unfortunate to see the weather eliminate the B Grade ladies.

After a very challenging day, the pairing of the most senior and the youngest in the competition found a way to be rewarded with the 2024 scratch championship, with a very impressive 27-hole round of 87/47=134 from 17-year-old Stephanie Baker and 76-years-young Pat Riordan.

Second placed were the 2023 winners, the pair of Lisa Garioch and Suzy Conquest, who were five shots back with 91/48=139.

Selma Mayne and Marie Hudak took out the 18-hole handicap win after finishing with a 73.5 net, just half a shot in front of Caroline James and Chitra Rankin, on 74.5 net.

It came down to a countback in the 27-hole, with both top pairs ending up on (114.5 net). It was Steph and Pat who would take this honour, which topped off a sensational day for the pair. Congratulations to the winners and a fantastic effort by all who stuck out the 27 holes.

Friday’s nine-hole medley Stableford had a super 24 points from Rory Kelly, to comfortably win over runner-up Oliver Cooper on 21 points, after a countback with Jack Hibberd and Luke Jeffers.

The MDGA District 4BBB Championships was played as men’s, ladies and medley divisions.

In the scratch, the pairs of Daryl Morgan and Cameron Pascoe, along with Ash Whitehouse and Brendan Rowse both came in with impressive scores of 66 net and with light fading, it was decided a play-off would be conducted at a later date to decide the winning pair.

Stephanie Baker and Lisa Garioch had a mighty round of 70 to claim the ladies’ championship, in front of Lee Bottomley and Jodene Tuau on 85.

The medley pairing of Chris and Kerry Grimmer had an 88 for them to leave winners, with Chris O’Brien and Gaye Briggs in second place on 92.

In the Stableford comp, Tuaree Kiriru and SV Turaki won the men’s on a great 46 points. Grant Giddings and Greg King were lucky to come away in second place, after a countback against Michael Faulkhead and Isaiah Faulkhead, and Alexander Spooner and Jarrad Stokker, all on 45 points.

The ladies’ section also came down to a countback, with Sandy Briggs and Margie Lampard having the better back nine, over runners-up, Steph Baker and Lisa Garioch, both pairs on 44 points.

There were two eagles, with Cameron Pascoe on the par-five 11th and Leigh Fuller on the par-five 14th.

NTPs: 4th – Luke Stafford 221cm, 7th – Barry Pilgram 57cm, 12th – Alexander Spooner 82cm, and 18th – Grant Giddings 141cm.

Sunday’s medley Stableford was a winner for Isaiah Faulkhead, with a super 41 points, in front of Ian Fleming, in second place on a lovely 40 points.

NTPs: 4th – Tom Pill 42cm, 7th – Josh Fleming 239cm, and 18th – Isaiah Faulkhead 109cm.
