Robinvale ward councillor not putting hand up for mayor role

ROBINVALE ward councillor Jade Benham will not be putting her hat in the ring for Swan Hill Rural City Council’s top job this time around.

With seven councillors set to vote to elect a mayor on Tuesday night, Cr Benham said the timing “isn’t right” for her to run.

“It’s something I’d potentially look at in the coming years if I get re-elected, but for now, definitely not,” she said.

“I’ve only been in the role since March — there is still a lot for me to learn, and there are far more experienced people than I to take on that role.

“I fully intend to run for council again next election, so then maybe into my next term it’s something I’ll think about, but at this stage there’s so much to learn with the role, how processes work and things like that.

“There are several councillors far more qualified and experienced than I.”

Meanwhile, council remains tight lipped about which councillors are in the running to lead the municipality, with no word as to whether current mayor Ann Young will run again.

The mayoral election will be held in Swan Hill on Tuesday, November 12 at 4.30pm.
