Webster hits back at ‘shame’ jibe over health crisis

THE Mallee’s federal MP has hit back at a Victorian Government minister who said she should “hang her head in shame” over the region’s health crisis.

State Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas this week used Question Time in parliament to blame the previous Coalition federal government for the poor state of regional health care around the country, and singled out Nationals MP Dr Webster over the situation in Mildura.

“The local member up there, National Party member Dr Anne Webster, should hang her head in shame that this situation has been able to develop under her watch, with the Liberal-National federal government completely neglectful of communities just like Mildura,” she said.

Dr Webster has used her Facebook page to respond to the comment.

“The misleading and false statement from the Victorian Health Minister about my local health advocacy must be called out,” she posted.

“It has been well documented that access to health care and boosting our workforce has been my key priority since my first day in parliament.

“That is why I fought for regional doctor training so that secondary school graduates had the opportunity to study medicine in Mildura, we promised the wet lab for La Trobe University which would make this a reality.”

Dr Webster also wrote that “a quick scour of my website will demonstrate just how much I talk about these issues and how passionate I am to see better health outcomes for my constituents”.

“The Labor minister’s statements were inflammatory spin. Her lack of understanding of Mildura’s health care crisis, and how we got here, has been exposed,” she wrote.
