End to Sunraysia football and netball season on the cards

THE Sunraysia Football and Netball League board is set for a Zoom meeting with club presidents tonight to confirm the fate of the 2021 season.

With Saturday’s lockdown announcement in effect at least until Thursday, September 2, the writing is on the wall for the football and netball competition, although no official announcement has been made on the status of the season.

The Millewa Football League, Millewa Netball Association and Sunraysia Women’s Football League are in the same boat and are likely to also pull the pin on their respective seasons.

Local competitions have had only one match day in seven weeks and, with group training and sports not always permitted immediately after lockdown restrictions were eased, it is unknown whether the competitions could return.

After the 2020 winter season was a wipeout due to the COVID pandemic, spirits were high about a return to action this year, but consistent stopping and starting through lockdowns has made it tough for all sports to gain continuity.

Other sporting competitions will also face similar decisions in the coming days and weeks, with October usually the start of the summer season in Sunraysia.
