Roos captain in hospital, out for season

WENTWORTH suffered a major blow on the eve of Saturday’s SFNL seniors’ clash with Imperials in Dareton, with captain Kaine Behr ruled out for the season with a serious groin injury.

Roos’ playing coach Wade Hancock said the inspirational Behr had felt a niggle in the warm-up to last week’s top-of-the-table clash with Irymple.

“My assistant spoke with Behry before the final quarter when he was clearly struggling, telling him to sit it out because we had it in the bag. But he wanted to stay out on the field with the boys,” Hancock said on Thursday.

“It’s come back to bite him now, though, because the injury is very serious.

“I went and saw him in hospital yesterday and he’s not in a great place.

“I don’t think surgery’s an option, but he’s got two to three weeks’ bed rest, he’ll be off work for six to eight weeks and won’t be playing for the next four or five months.”

Hancock said the players were shattered when broke the news of Behr’s injury at training on Tuesday night.

“It was one of the worst nights we’ve had at training in a long time,” he said.

“The boys were shocked because he hadn’t told any of them just how bad it was. He’s our captain and one of the team’s leaders and will be hard to replace.”
