MERBEIN produced a strong second quarter to help set up a 17-point win against Red Cliffs in their SFNL seniors’ clash at Quandong Park on Saturday.

The Magpies trailed by eight points at the first break after kicking only 1.3.

But they followed it up with a five-goal-to-one second term before they went on to keep the Tigers at bay in the second half.

Daniel Tung continued his fine season for the Magpies, while Ash Rowe, big man Matt Rix and James Stewart (four goals) also put in solid performances.

For the Tigers, last week’s player of the round, Jonty Marciano, was his team’s best as he saw plenty of the ball and booted two goals.

With one round left, Merbein will finish the season in sixth spot with a 7-8 win-loss record.

The Tigers, which are in a rebuilding year under Chris Lee’s guidance, sit a spot below the Magpies at 5-10 for the 2022 season.

Lee’s troops face a tough final home-and-away clash on Saturday when they travel to top guns Irymple.

The Magpies should rack up a big win when they host the winless South Mildura this weekend.
