Swallows switches work a treat

SOMETIMES when a game is slowed down positional changes can give teams a shot in the arm.

Irymple led an impressive Imperials side by just a goal at half time as the rain impacted their usual fast passing ability, leaving coach Sherrie Geister to swap some bibs at the long break.

Mackenzie Ryan and Shakara Delcastegne especially, moving into WA and GA respectively, helped the third-placed Swallows to break the game open, leading to a 51-37 victory at Brian Weightman Oval.

Sophie Price (centre) and Bronte Pezzaniti (WD) also impressed in slightly differing roles.

“It was a really pleasing game actually and a really enjoyable game, I don’t often say that much but that second half was enjoyable,” Geister said. “I’ve been thinking about these kinds of things for a few weeks now and not having Vanessa (Power) this week it provided the opportunities to do so.

“‘Shak’ has won an under-17 premiership playing at GA but it has been a few years since then and has become a really solid mid-court player.

“She took to it pretty well and worked well with Shelby (Trigg).

“Sometimes on a slower day you need that strength and direction and ‘Macca’ provided that really well.”

Defender Elyse Kempton also pulled off some stunning intercepts, seeming to appear from nowhere with perfect timing to grab hold of possession.

While the second half was less than ideal for the hosts their effort and endeavour could not be questioned, while a brave throng of green and white supporters made considerable noise for every goal, intercept and significant play.

Imps centre Tracey Sherlock leaves no stone unturned when it comes to covering the court and she did the same in tough conditions on Saturday, while the versatile Ella Hards also impressed in green and white wherever she was utilised.
