CARDROSS moved back up to second spot on the MFNL A Grade ladder with a tough 48-43 win at home over Meringur on Saturday.
The Lions seemed to have the game well under control at halftime with a 10-goal lead but the fifth-placed Kangaroos hit form in the third quarter, reducing the margin to four points at the end of the third before Cardross steadied in the last term.
Lions’ shooters Georgia Leutner and Tamara Hamence led the way for the hosts along with Shelby Couch while co-coach Bella Connelly, shooter Emily Birch and defender Madelyn McPhee were among the Kangas’ better performers.
Nangloc’s midseason surge continued at the weekend when they knocked off formerly second-placed Werrimull at Lake Cullulleraine.
Four wins in five games have seen last year’s premiers rise from the bottom to fourth on a close ladder.
Werrimull had control of the encounter early and held a handy five goal lead at the main break, but the Demons turned the game on its head in the third quarter with a 19-goal outburst while holding the Magpies to eight on their way to an impressive 60-50 triumph.
Charging Nangy finally got their goal differential in the black and are eight points behind the third-placed Pies. They have five games to go in the regular season to bridge that gap and possibly push for the finals double chance.
Dees’ midcourter Tamara Loveridge was best on court and received ample support from playing coach Ginine Sluiter and Amber King.
Shooter Chelsea Newey again found herself among Werrimull’s best along with coach Jolene Neyland and veteran defender Anna Thomson.
A 16 goals to five second quarter set up ladder leaders Bambill’s 45-37 victory over bottom side Gol Gol at Mildura Senior College, but the Hawks battled it out to the end and even outscored the Saints in the final term.
Shooter Tessa Houkamau was the top Saint with Erin Hird and Georgia Bower also on the list.
Emily Phillips, Maka Clarke and Jarae Johnson stood out for a Gol Gol combination that is considerably better than a 1-9 record suggests.
