Singles focus for junior tennis

SACRED Heart Tennis Club is calling for more junior players for the upcoming winter season, which starts next month.

With many sporting clubs experiencing a decrease in junior players, Sacred Heart junior tennis club delegate Carole DeMaria said she hoped this year’s new junior tennis format would draw in some new players.

“Our new format is the Winter Junior Tennis League and is a combination of teams and individual tennis, which sees players playing for points for themselves and their club,” she said.

“This new format allows for adjustments throughout the season so players can play with players their standard, making their tennis more enjoyable.”

Ms DeMaria said in previous years, the format was more team-based.

“There will be more singles played across all levels,” she said.

“Our aim with the new format is to have matches with players of similar standards irrespective of their club, gender or age.”

Ms DeMaria said this would allow for the game to be more competitive.

“It is a shame to see so many local sports lacking junior players post-COVID,” she said.

“Tennis is a very inclusive sport that you can play your whole life.”

Competition will begin on May 14 and will run until September.

Sunraysia’s six clubs are Gol Gol, Red Cliffs, Sacred Heart, Sarnia, St Andrews and Wentworth.

Ms DeMaria said players wishing to play in the league would need to register to play and be present at the grading days on April 30 and May 7.

She said anyone interested in joining the club could contact her on 0448 334 440 or email [email protected]

“We encourage everyone to pick up a racquet and would love to see lots of new people playing tennis this year,” she said.
