SUNRAYSIA District Tennis Association matches May 18

SUNRAYSIA District Tennis Association matches were back on home turf last Saturday, but in some close division 2 matches teams were not able to make the most of any home-ground advantage.

Saint Andrews Slammers made the interstate trip to play Alcheringa All Stars.

Craig Pratt and Munaf Ami started off the account for the Saints with an 8-5 win over Randel Darling and David Walker, while Pratt and Dave Antony took out a hard -fought tie-breaker against Darling and Reece Kurle.

In the final men’s doubles Kurle and Walker were ruthless in their 8-0 demolition of Antony and Ami, giving the home team a two-sets-to-one advantage.

The women’s doubles fell the other way with Karley Coombs and Natasha George for the All Stars beating Julie Dunn and Sue Hardie 8-3, followed again by a tie-breaker 8-7 in favour of the All Stars.

Tash Pedler and Hardie reversed the trend by winning the third doubles 8-3 over Vhilla Evans and George.

That brought the scores back to three sets a piece with the mixed to play.

All three mixed were taken out by St Andrews to give the Saints a six-sets-to-three win but with a game difference of only three.

The final scores were St Andrews Slammers six sets 58 games defeated Alcheringa All Stars three sets 55.

In the second division 2 match it was Wentworth Webels coming south of the border to take on Sacred Heart Starters.

An 8-6 win to Christian Di Silvestre and Lachie Prothero was a shining light in the men’s doubles for Sacred Heart.

Once the Wenty men had found their land legs they were unstoppable.

Peter Baird and Jake Debrincat beat Samar Warring and Di Silvestre 8-6 and Hayden and Peter Baird won 8-5 against Warring and Prothero.

In the women’s doubles an 8-6 win to Jen Gathercole and Ally Robinson of Sacred Heart over Anne Snow and Alicia Hancock was a tussle.

The remaining sets were more one-sided affairs in favour of Wentworth.

After the completion of the doubles Wentworth was in a strong position, four sets to two.

The first mixed dealt a crushing blow to the Starters as Peter Baird and Caitlin Hancock trounced their opposition of Warring and Carolina Kaiser 8-1.

Sacred Heart rallied and won the final two mixed.

However, the result was already in the bag for the Webels, five sets to four, 58 games to 50.

Tennis takes place all day on Saturday, including the Hot Shots program for young beginners held at Aero tennis courts in Eleventh Street. Children from four years of age are welcome to go along and have fun while learning the basics of tennis. Hot Shots starts at 9am.
